Soft Tissue Therapy

Soft Tissue Therapy is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is applicable not just to sports people but to anybody wishing to guard against or recover from a soft tissue injury. Soft Tissue does not mean these techniques are necessarily ‘soft’ but that they treat damage to the soft tissues.

The techniques used by soft tissue therapists have been developed to ensure effective and efficient results are gained from each massage given.

Soft Tissue Therapy may:

  • Improve circulation and lymphatic flow
  • Assist in the removal of metabolic waste
  • Sedate or stimulate nerve endings
  • Increase or decrease muscle tone
  • Increase or decrease muscle length
  • Remodel scar tissue when required
  • Assist in mental preparation for sporting participation

  • Aid general wellness

Soft Tissue Therapy used in support of other therapies

Soft Tissue Therapy can also be used in support of other therapies to assist in the rehabilitation of muscular injuries.

In all types of massage therapy, the intention is to relax the soft tissues, increase delivery of blood and oxygen to the massaged areas, warm them, and help the body to relax.

Sports and Remedial Massage is just a small part of Soft Tissue Therapy which uses massage along with more advanced techniques to treat all soft tissue injuries.

We will begin the first treatment discussing symptoms, medical history and desired results which will be followed by an assessment to determine what the issues are and the best course of action.

If Soft Tissue Therapy is a suitable form of treatment for the symptoms presented, a range of techniques will be used, including massage, to aid recovery from injury and improve soft tissue condition and joint mobility.

Again, depending on the symptoms, we may then offer advice on a range of remedial exercises and lifestyle factors aimed at speeding up recovery, preventing injury recurrence as well as improving posture, performance and function.

The techniques used can include one or all of the following:

  • Remedial massage techniques for all skeletal muscles
  • Sports massage (this can include deep tissue massage)
  • Injury treatment
  • Neuromuscular techniques
  • Soft Tissue Release technique
  • Muscle Energy Techniques (integrating Post Isometric Relaxation and Reciprocal Inhibition methods)
  • Myofascial techniques
  • Positional Release technique
